Updated: Feb 16, 2022

Work Experiences of Undocumented Women in the Food Industry During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

As a member of the 2020-2021 Marco Antonio Firebaugh Program, Erika Castaño wrote “‘Calladita Te Ves Más Bonita’ You Look Prettier When You Shut Up: Work Experiences of Undocumented Women in the Food Industry During the COVID-19 Pandemic.” Her research describes how undocumented women were unprotected and heavily exploited by their bosses during the COVID-19 pandemic. This work is applying a feminist-Marxist intersectional view of the pandemic to discuss the economic and social precarity undocumented women workers endured in restaurants.

Erika Castaño (She/Her) is a #firstgen transfer student, majoring in Sociology and minoring in Anthropology. An active member of her community on and off-campus; currently, she is focusing on the economic hardships during Covid, faced by the undocumented Yucatan Mayan diaspora in the Bay Area. Erika has been the recipient of The Slaubungin Scholarship and The Chicana Latina Foundation Scholarship. Some of her non-academic interests are playing cello, and also she sees herself as an amateur music composer and an enthusiastic latte artist.
